Listening to multiple strangers declaiming ‘Moby Dick’ for a good portion of the day. It is the 20th anniversary of the novel’s Reading Marathon at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. In each voice there is a distinctive individuality that colors the reading and Melville’s voice becomes any person’s ~ everyone. Such a pleasure to be surprised and to follow their many variations with the richly annotated version online. Echoes of genius in commonplace, so attractive to the casual eavesdropper. Very peaceful day, with dogs not indulging in nonsense.
