‘To know how to put in practice the Love
that to God and man thou must profess,
To love thy God as thou would thy ultimate purpose,
and man as the image of his Author

To act candidly and smoothly,
and please everyone without fawning;
To master thy own temper
And follow others in their humor
With joy, promote the good of others,
To feel as thy own the pain of others,
to know how to decline,
To know how to acquiesce,
To be discreet and yet not to pretend,
Exercise this prudently
to improve at the Science of Living’.

~ a 1744 sonnet by Ignacio Benito Avalle
